Minnie Driver Season Finale on the U.S. Version of Who Do You Think You Are? Wednesday on TLC

This week will be the season finale for the U.S. Version of Who Do You Think You Are? In this episode, Minnie Driver sets out to learn more about her secretive father and traces the highs and lows of his career in the Royal Air Force during World War II. Through military documents, she comes to understand why her father was the way he was, and how his combat experience impacted the rest of his life. Then, since Minnie never met her paternal grandparents, she follows the trail in England until she comes face-to-face with the very first relative she’s ever met on her father’s side, and finds a kindred spirit in a family member she never knew about.

Some of the cities/locations visited include: Minnie’s home, Malibu, CA; Minnie’s mother’s apartment, West London, UK; Brooklands Museum, Weybridge, Surrey, UK; Royal Air Force Museum, Hendon, London, UK; Rockside Hall, Matlock, Derbyshire, UK; Stockton Central Library, Stockton-on-Tees, Durham, UK; Eileen Wiper’s home, Darlington, Durham, UK; Middlesbrough Central Library, Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, UK; Stockport Plaza Theatre, Stockport, Greater Manchester, UK; and Minnie’s home, Hollywood Hills, CA.

The episode will be broadcast on Wednesday, August 27, at at 9pm Eastern/8pm Central, on TLC. Check your local listings for the time and channel nearest you.

How odd. Minnie Driver did exactly the same journey on the UK version of Who Do You Think You Are? last year. Is the US version running out of celebrities? See: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0388r75

Six weeks gone already? TOO soon. Yet other really insipid shows go on for YEARS!

I much prefer watching UK versions, especially since the US seems to slip in so many more commercials, making it necessarily shortened. I remember the last time they did this the US version was so disjointed I wondered how people really understood the whole story. By watching the UK version more details were filled in.
So, what this really means is the Who Do You Think You Are US only made three original episodes and that’s our whole season. Well, I guess I’ll have to “count my blessings” and be happy we had something rather than nothing.

The U.K. version of “Who Do You Think You Are?” may be found on the BBC television web site at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b007t575

HOWEVER, the videos will only play if you connect from a U.K. I.P. address. That is, if your computer connects to the Internet from within the United Kingdom. I happen to be in Glasgow, Scotland, at the moment and can watch the videos on my computer. However, when I return to the United States next week I will not be able to view them.

The same is true for the U.S. version of “Who Do You Think You Are?” Most computer users in the United States will be able to view the U.S. version’s videos but people in other countries are locked out.

The reson for all this is licensing and similar legal issues. The producers of one country’s version of “Who Do You Think You Are?” have a legal agreement to provide the program only in that one country, not worldwide.

There are “workarounds” for that, such as using a virtual private network (VPN) to connect first to a gateway server in the host country and then use that to connect to the public Internet within that country. However, most people are not familiar with VPNs and similar techniques.

Three original episodes? No – unless I was in another dimension last year, the episodes featuring Rachel McAdams, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Cynthia Nixon, Kelsy Grammar and Valerie Bertinelli were new for 2014. I can’t vouch for the Minnie Driver one as from what I’m reading, though it was new to us, it wasn’t new to the UK. Originally, I think Lauren Graham was one of the celebrities listed (in earlier promos); but for whatever reason, it appears that she wasn’t one of those featured this season.

Morgaine, There seem to have been only three original episodes in the US versions this year, not the UK episodes.

It was such a short season. Do you know where you can write/email to suggest other celebrities for future seasons?
