GenBridge is a powerful tool for genealogy software developers. It facilitates the transfer of data between different genealogy programs and does so in a much better manner than GEDCOM. Every software developer I know who has implemented GenBridge says good things about it.
GenBridge is not just for standalone genealogy programs. In fact, it can be used for many projects. Best of all, it can be free.
A lot of software developers running data collection projects for historical societies, one name studies, web projects, and other non-profit projects apparently don't realize that GenBridge is free for non-profit projects. If you are a software developer involved in collecting or exporting genealogy data as part of a non-profit project, you might want to look at GenBridge.
A newly-updated GenBridge Software Development Kit (SDK) is now available. The following announcement was written by Wholly Genes Software:
GenBridge UpdateThe direct import technology that is built into every copy of The Master Genealogist and Family Tree SuperTools is also available for use by other developers. A variety of public and private projects (including several companion products on our web store) are using GenBridge in order to read data directly from a The Master Genealogist, Family Tree Maker™, Personal Ancestral File™, Legacy™, Generations™, and other programs.
By reading those file formats directly, GenBridge avoids the many types of data loss or corruption that are common with GEDCOM transfers (e.g., multiple names, birth order, non-traditional relationships, custom even types). It also supports many data types that do not go into a typical GEDCOM file at all, including multimedia, custom flags, source types, and more.
Now the GenBridge Software Development Kit (SDK) has been updated to include all of the most recent enhancements. Developers who are using the freeware license should refer to their original email notification for the password and download the updated SDK from: http://www.whollygenes.com/files/genbridgesdk.exe or visit: http://www.whollygenes.com/developers.htm
Use of the GenBridge SDK to access TMG data is free for personal use. Non-profit projects may qualify for a free license for the full suite of import formats. Other commercial use requires a modest licensing fee. Developer correspondence should be directed to gbdeveloper@whollygenes.com.
