I will be traveling this week to Austin, Texas to attend the annual conference of the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS). There is a strong possibility that there will not be as many articles as usual for the next week in the daily edition of this newsletter, due to my travel plans. However, I almost always find interesting tidbits at these conferences so perhaps there will be some news to report each day of the conference. Also, with the new "blog" format of this newsletter I can now upload daily reports and even pictures to the newsletter. This week I will probably be posting articles and pictures from the conference within minutes to http://blog.eogn.com.
I have attended most of the FGS conferences for the past fifteen years or so and have enjoyed them I suspect this year's event will be at least as good as those of past years. To read more about this year's FGS conference, look at my earlier article.
If you have the time available and can be in Austin, I would recommend this conference as a "must attend" event for any genealogist. If you do attend, please stop by and say "Hello." I will be spending a lot of time in the booth of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, just inside the main entrance of the exhibitors' hall.
There is a rumor of a dinner on Saturday evening for readers of this newsletter and their friends. These dinners are never planned in advance, have no agenda and have no guarantees. There are never any speeches or presentations. Each such dinner is simply a "pick up" group of people with a common interest in genealogy who go out to eat together on Saturday evening after the conference is closed. The only charge is for the food and beverages that you order. We typically go to a low-cost restaurant that will accommodate a large group of rowdy genealogists on a Saturday evening.
If you would like to join this group of rowdies for the unplanned meal on Saturday, you must sign up at the New England Historic Genealogical Society booth by the end of day Friday. We do have to give an exact headcount to the restaurant early on Saturday morning so that they will be able to accommodate us.
See you in Austin!
