The following is an announcement from the U.S. National Genealogical Society:
Sat. Oct. 30, 9am-3pm, 4527 17th St N, Arlington, VirginiaNGS is leaving historic Glebe House. Genealogical books, maps, genealogical CDs, microfiche, microfiche reader, microfilm, microfilm reader, NGS clothing and logo items, antiques, computers, typewriters, printers, office supplies and furniture will be sold. Take this opportunity to enhance your personal genealogical library and office!
So, why don't they put all of this stuff up on eBay, where they could get better prices for it and reach a wider audience?
Unless, of course, NGS employees are looking for good deals on equipment and books.

Selling "Genealogical books, maps, genealogical CDs, microfiche, microfiche reader, microfilm, microfilm reader, NGS clothing and logo items..."? Sounds like they are selling everything of possible value to members. (Insult to injury that the majority of members don't have access to this "yard sale.") The manuscript collection has already been given to the DAR Library, which was announced by Eric Grundset in April. (Strange that never was posted on the NGS website nor announced in the newsletter...) Would the last member of the society please turn out the light?

So, the lending library is in St. Louis.
The manuscript library is at the DAR?
The headquarters building is gone.
All the extra equipment, clothing and books are headed home with the few NGS employees/members that live close enough to load up their station wagons.
The National conference is a pay to attend affair.
The only thing left is the Quarterly, which based on the systematic dismantling of the Society, I expect to find out that Ancestry.com is buying.
I guess that our dues should drop to almost nothing since there is nothing left.
Kinda woulda been nice if they would have let the members know that they're shutting it down a little before the general public.
What's the deal with the manuscript library? Can NGS member still access it without being DAR members?

I doubt if the NGS employees got much. There are almost no employees left.
