In the November 12, 2001, edition of this newsletter, I described a method of using Windows programs within the Linux operating system. By using an intermediary, or "middleware," product, this can provide the best of both worlds: the power, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of Linux combined with the ability to run tens of thousands of Windows programs, including genealogy software.
Since writing that article three-plus years ago, I have upgraded my Linux system, but I still use a number of Windows programs on it. With this middleware product, I have been able to run RootsMagic, Legacy, The Master Genealogist, and other Windows genealogy programs on a Linux system. Now the company that provides the Windows interface for Linux has made the concept even more attractive by offering a much cheaper version.
