Dino (All Dino, All the Time)

Dick,

I noticed that each page in the book you produced has a copyright notice on the bottom naming Alpha To Omega as the copyright holder. Can this be changed, or is it stuck on them?

Dick Eastman

---> I do not see any options in the menus to change the copyright statement nor is it mentioned in the users manual.

Margaret

Nothing came up when I clicked on your pdf file for Kennedy.

Dick Eastman

Margaret, it works for me and, as you can see from Dino's earlier comments, it obviously works for him. I have no idea why it is not working for you.

Is anyone else having a problem viewing the PDF file at http://www.eogn.com/examples/alphatoomega/kennedy.pdf ?

Dino (All Dino, All the Time)

Dick,

I'm not sure that I'd like to print off my research with somone else's copyright on it. Maybe the authors of the program can help us out on this one?

Ray Brandt

My attorney insisted that I have the copyright as I have. I talked to a representative with FedEx Kinkos today. They would not copy a blank sheet with the copyright on it but would make copies of the same sheet that has information on it. I will talk to my attorney regarding the copyright on the sheet. Its purpose, I believe, is to prevent an unauthorized person from making copies and reselling them. Maybe that is being over-protective of something that is not very likely to happen. I will look into it and make a response.

Ray Brandt

This is a follow-up to my earlier comments regarding Dino's concern.

The copyright notice on the Alpha To Omega Genealogy form strictly applies to the arrangement of matter on the blank form before any entries of genealogical significance. Put another way, the copyright notice will have no bearing whatsoever on entries made dealing with anyone's specific genealogy. I hope this will satisfy your concerns and that you will find the program and the forms for arrangement of genealogical matter to meet with your satisfaction.

Best regards, Ray Brandt

Jennifer

I don't think I am ever going to produce a book and share it with relatives when the front cover says "copyright by" someone else!

Everette Carr

The Alpha to Omega could be a very useful program particularly for providing written copies of research to interested individuals. However, the inclusion of the copyright and web site URL on each and every page or any page is a serious problem. I would not have a problem with the trademark at the top right of the pages as it is fairly unobtrusive, but the copyright and URL are definitely a deal breaker for me. I would like to have the program but would not consider purchasing it as long as the copyright and URL were on the pages.

Ray Brandt

Thanks to all for your comments and suggestions. We sincerely appreciate them and will keep them on file to be considered for any future revision. The development of Alpha to Omega took more than 3 years and considerable expense to work out all of the details. Copyright applies to matter originated by Alpha to Omega Genealogy, Inc., not to content added by purchasers. The comment regarding URL is puzzling; there is no URL on pages printed from the program.

Dino (All Dino, All the Time)

Ray,

Maybe you can change your copyright notice to something like:
Forms copyright Alpha
or
Format of Information copyright Alpha

I'm sure that would help your product gain a wider user base. If I were to print off a 50 page A2O book and then take it down ro Office Max to have 20 copies of it made, they wouldn't do it with that copyright notice on it.

Ray Brandt

Dino

I talked to FedEx Kinkos regarding this and they wouldn't print blank sheets with the copyright. But they would print sheets that has data (names, dates, etc) on the sheet even though it has the copyright.

Dino (All Dino, All the Time)

Ray,

Thanks for the update.I'm not quite sure why they would do one and not the other, but whatever their rules are ...

Ray Brandt

To whom it may concern

We are going to address the copyright issue that has been expressed these last several days. It is in the works. The copyright is not intended to prevent people from making copies of their work. Personal copying for noncommercial use is authorized. Those who have purchased the program will receive a revised CD at no cost to them if it is determined that the revision is appropriate.

Alpha to Omega appears to be an excellent, useful, program. I can appreciate Mr. Brandt's concerns about his creation.

However, my concern in using it would be the appearance of an unlimited copyright statement on each and every page. I know that if I sent copies of a book printed using it most readers would question me as to why "Alpha to Omega" published and copyrighted it.

To put it another way, would you care to type a manuscript using Microsoft Word if the phrase "Copyright 2005, Microsoft Corp" appeared on every page?

I know that this is not Mr. Brandt's stated intent. But it is the appearance of his product that his company owns the copyright of all the contents of the page. His personal assurances on this web site do not clarify the wording on the pages printed.

Perhaps his attorney doesn't realize that customers will be very dissatisfied with the copyright notice as written and printed. This could dramatically reduce the market for this (otherwise) excellent program.

How about the statement "printed using Alpha to Omega software" in VERY SMALL print at the bottom of each page. Ray, ask your attorney.

Dino (All Dino, All the Time)

George, it looks like he has taken our comments into consideration and is making the proper adjustments. I understand his concern about his formats, though.

You have a good point about the MS-Word copyright, though.

Joanne

I like the 'Alpha to Omega' concept after reviewing the PDF book online, but definitely agree that the copyright information placement is a problem.

The name and copyright placements, top right and bottom right, are intrusive to the family records printed on each page. The font size is too large and the wording is placed within the borders enclosing the family information. Not only are both distracting, but the lower right placement does give the impression that the printed family information is copyrighted by 'Alpha to Omega'.

Hopefully, the pages can be redesigned to have any 'Alpha to Omega' wording, top right and bottom right, MUCH smaller and outside the border lines. Also, there needs to be a place where the compiler of the family information/research can enter his/her name to be added to each page, reducing confusion as to whose work has been printed.

Dianne

I was very interested in the "Alpha to Omega" program until I reviewed the PDF book online and read these comments. I definitely would not use this to print books that contain my own research. I would pay for a tool to use in presenting my research. I would not pay for or use a tool that "plastered" advertising for the tool all over my research product........the multiple name and copyright notice placement on each and every page is very intrusive and seems more like an attempt to advertise on the backs of the endusers. Also, I agree with Joanne that there needs to be space for the compiler of the information/research to be identified. This program definitely has promise.........but it's not ready for prime time, IMO.

Ray Brandt

A comment regarding the compiler of the book. I always insert a letter to Dear Descendants: and insert this right after the Title sheet. I will say how many people with the last name of (Descendants name and sometimes there is another name that has a significant number of people). I will make comments that I think are of interest to those receiving the book. Like when so and so came from wherever, on what boat, etc. When I end the letter, I sign my name. Thus, I get credit for preparing the book. I also ask the recipients of the book to notify me of corrections and additions. Let them know how they can make contact.

One of my books had 4 sheets to the letter. Others have had 1 and 2 sheets.

This should address the Dianne's concern.
