Gary T. Johnson of Evanston, Illinois is an attorney, civic leader, history enthusiast, and genealogist. He will become the eighth president of the Chicago Historical Society, effective Aug. 22.
"This appointment is a dream for me, because history has always been my first love," Johnson said. "History has driven my work in law and civil rights, and I feel that the Chicago Historical Society is a natural extension of my personal passion as well as my leadership and management expertise. I look forward to continuing the museum's deep commitment to reaching out to all of Chicago's diverse communities."
An avid genealogist, he has also done extensive research on his family's background, tracking ancestors in multiple countries and languages. With that background, he said, he wants to make sure that the Chicago Historical Society is user-friendly for the lay researchers looking for information about their own families or neighborhoods as well as the experienced historians.
