Leif B. Kristensen has written two articles that will be of interest to most genealogy software developers as well as to many serious genealogists. He writes:
I have written a couple of articles about the migration of my data from a TMG database to a full-fledged SQL RDBMS. The project is still in progress, and I'll probably continue to write about this stuff on my homesite as long as I'm working on it. Don't hold your breath for a finished application, though, unless someone with guts are stepping in to do all the coding for me :-)
The articles can be found at:

Oh, great, another model.
I'm more interested in a new model for exchanging genealogical information. Is there any group actively working on a standard that addresses the weaknesses of GEDCOM and that can garner broad vendor support? I see a GEDCOM 6.0 Beta spec out there, but it seems dormant.
I guess there's no incentive for genie app vendors to work toward this -- they don't want to make it easier for someone to drop their app in favor of another. Is there any independent organization besides LDS that has the influence to make this happen?

I suggest that all genealogical societies send a letter, on behalf of their members, to the makers of the most popular programs and beseech them to address the problems associated with transferring data from one program to another.
