I just want to know, if you have any answers as to what duties and jobs, these women had, going into the new hosuehold? if so, what were they?

Dick Eastman

Yes. Between 700 and perhaps 1,000 young, single women traveled to New France to a place where there were few women. The lives of many of them have been detailed in numerous books and web sites mentioned in the above article.

A few of the women were of noble birth, mostly the younger daughters of noble men and women. They generally fared well in New France. The majority of these women, however, were commoners and the stories of their lives vary widely. Many married local farmers, fur trappers, fishermen and soldiers and settled down to be housewives and mothers, usually of large families.

Several of the women were from countries other than France and at least one was of African ancestry, possibly the first free African to voluntarily move to North America.

Consult any of the books and web sites listed in the above article for details of many of these women's lives.
