I have my hard disk partitioned into several logical drives. Does the system prevent me from writing to all of them, or only to the one containing the Windows operating system? And if I have one partition set up for Linux, can I write to that?

Dick Eastman

Hi George.

The Live CD doesn't use your hard drive at all. It reads everything from the CD-ROM drive. Data can be stored to floppy, USB devices or network drives.

As a result, the formatting of your hard drive is irrelevant for the Live CD.

Alex Roitman

George,

If you would like to access your existing partition, you should be able to do it using Live CD. It is especially easy for the Linux partition.

To access your existing partition, you may choose System -> Administration -> Disks from the main menu. This will open the Disks Manager window where you can browse all the partitions and decide where and how to access any of them.

Of course, if you prefer the command line you may also open the Terminal (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal from the main menu) and then type: "sudo mount /dev/hda1 /mnt" where /dev/hda1 is your desired partition (substitute as needed) and /mnt is the mounting point.

Either way, you can read and write if you so desire.

Hope it helps,
Alex

Update: The producers of the Linux Genealogy Live CD have now added regular downloads via http, ftp, and rsync, in addition to the torrents. The details are on the GRAMPS Live CD page at http://gramps-project.org.

Above you stated:

"Linux desktop systems are almost never bothered by viruses or other "nasties." Theoretically, a virus written especially for Linux systems could appear, but that has not yet been an issue. In fact, you cannot obtain an anti-virus program for Linux simply because there aren't any available. There is no need for one, so nobody has written one."

I am a big fan of Linux, and try to use it over Windows. However, I must point out that this is inaccurate. While there have not been a lot of Linux viruses, they do exist. One is making the rounds in the news this week. There are also several anti-virus programs for Linux, both free and fee.

The new Linux virus making the rounds in recent days is known as Linux.Plupii, aka Luppi, aka Lupper. It infects AWStats, PHP and Webhints, all of which are web SERVER programs. Workstations and servers used for other purposed – such as mail servers and database servers – are unlikely to be infected. Also, systems running up-to-date patches are immune, as are systems with decent firewalls.

I have been running Linux since the late 90's and it was never hard to install, it was easier than DOSe of that time - other wise I would have kept running DOSe software.
What's this about Linux being a replacement for DOSe? GNU Linux is a replacement for Unix, you can not compare apple to oranges as that just doesn't work.
It is nice to see a live CD for this purpose as many people really could use it, so that's for the review in that respect.
