You can find out from the Heralds in the country that issued the coat of arms. You can find many details by clicking on the links mentioned in the above article.

One more comment: If you are authorized to use some coat of arms, you probably already know about it. That means that your father was authorized to use it and probably he told you that the right would be yours after he died.

If you are the oldest son of the oldest son of the oldest son of the oldest son (etc.) of the person originally awarded the coat of arms, you might be allowed to display the same coat of arms, after you have applied for the right to display it. In cases where there was no son, the right can be passed to a younger brother or to a nephew but, again, only after that person APPLIES for permission.

The right to display arms is quite rare, only a few people have the authority to do so. Keep in mind that even if your father was authorized to display a coat of arms, you are not allowed to do so until after your father's death and then ONLY if you apply for the authority. For most people who do not know if they are authorized, the answer 99% of the time will be "you are not."

"However, the only place I know of that allows for coats of arms to be used by everyone of a certain surname is Japan. If you are a direct all-male descendant of a Samurai warrior, you can ignore this article."

In Poland (Central Europe) we have similar - every son of a nobleman has the same (exactly the same) coat of arms as his father. And if you get married with girl from another family with coat of arms, your wife gets your coat of arms. But youur children get a coat of arms only from you - not from your wife (there are some exceptions - not very often).

Rubbish! We aren't out to scam people. Right from the get go we tell them it is for entertainment purposes only. The coats of arms in our data bases are the most ancient found on record...you know the 99+ year rule or 3 generations. We found one that had "died" four hundred years ago! So then what?...
We also encourage our customers to make their own coat of arms (for entertainment purposes only). If they are really serious we tell them they can register that coat of arms, so it will be official! And yes, when registering a coat of arms, they will tell you if everything was drawn correctly. A coat of arms is very involved. If an individual is issued a coat and has a first born son, the first son may use that coat...but the second son has to add to the blazon his own symbol denoting he is the second son, usually in chief...and on and on...Found one coat of arms whose blazon had been split 741 times! Take a look at Prince William's coat of arms...he uses a symbol from his mother's family, the Spencers, as well as Prince Harry (but he is the second son). An Escallop.
If you are really serious you may make an appointment with the Herald of the College of Arms in the country you think you are from. Only if he thinks you are worthy of his time.
Lived in England for 7 years, found Heraldry very interesting. I'm just a stupid Yank, who was raised by an English woman (yes, she was born in Plymouth, England).
We also tell people about their surname. Only in the general terms of the surname, not their personal history. What country it was first found on record, the meaning of the name, and what other countries it has been found in.
People are proud of their names. People are curious and interested in their names. People are romantic in history, especially the medieval period. Knights, castles, jousting, armor...yes, I saw it all. We lived backyard to backyard with a 15th century thatched cottage...my daughter spent her summer watching the thatchers redo the roof....Does the name Thatcher ring a bell? Yes, she was a member of the Garter...her coat of arms will die with her.
Just wanted to have my say...
