Sue Phillips asked a question this week. I do not know of a good answer, but I suspect that some of the newsletter readers can help. Here is her question:
I'd like to know about file naming conventions "best practices" for approximately 250 JPG / TIF images of assorted ancestors. For my personal photos, I use a chronological naming convention, but often I do not have birth or death dates for these individuals. Many names are repeated through generations. I am loath to use a "person ID number" which is tied to any particular software program. Some images are of collateral families and / or spouses of relatively distant relatives, so ahnentafel numbers would not be sufficient.
I am at a loss as to the best way to organize these files for retrieval and for preservation over time. This may be a topic that would be interesting to others as well. If there is any information out there, I've not found it.
I appreciate all your good work for us genealogists!
I can think of several file-naming conventions but don't know of any that would be considered "best practices." Can anyone else help?
If so, please post your answer below.
