ProQuest, the company that produces HeritageQuest Online, has now announced another service of interest to genealogists: online listings of obituaries.
The new service has a tentative title of ProQuest Obituaries and will offer access to obituaries and death notices from national newspapers dating back to 1851. ProQuest Obituaries enables users to find ancestors and historical figures, and to trace their family histories through a database of more than 10 million names. ProQuest Obituaries will provide scanned images of original obituaries and death notices from The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Tribune, The Washington Post, The Atlanta Constitution, The Boston Globe, and The Chicago Defender.
ProQuest Obituaries will launch in the summer of 2006. The first release of ProQuest Obituaries will focus on historical records, and will then grow to include over 150 current newspapers.
