Perhaps you've seen them while driving down the road - those backlit, block-letter signs in front of a church announcing the upcoming sermon or maybe just providing a thought for the day.
But why should religion get all the roadside fun? Now you can, too, with the online Church Sign Generator. Choose from five different designs, enter your text, and presto! A photo of your custom sign appears. You can save the photo to your computer at no charge, or, for a few dollars, order magnets, stickers, and coffee mugs printed with your message.

I was introduced to this website more than a year ago when the only offerings were the Fist Baptist Church and Trinity Church, which I assumed to be Episcopalian. Now I see that they have a Catholic, a Pentecostal, and an Assembly of God sign.
I at first thought that this idea was cute, but it has the potential of being abused and the churches ridiculed. I have even received (by email) some "church signs" with messages offensive to the beliefs of the featured church.
And I don't know if I've ever seen such a sign at a Catholic Church - at least not with announcements of sermons or a thought for the day. So I wonder how real that sign is.
Maybe I'm just a grouch, but I wonder about the motive behind this site except profit.
Maybe if they offered a sign for the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, I'd lighten up....

Oh, how fun! I went to the site and created 5 signs and emailed them off to friends and family. Genealogy related? Sure. Humorous? Count on it. Who says genealogists don't have fun and lack a sense of humor?
But CAUTION: this thing will absorb time worse than Sponge Bob Squarepants.
Meanwhile, if you wish some Genealogical diversions, I have FREE crosswords and quizzes available at http://www.ShoeStringGenealogy.com/ssg1.htm so stop buy and check them out.

I'm glad you posted this. Now I know what a fake church sign looks like. I think I was almost guilty of passing one along - thinking it was the real thing.
