Just to mention that a digitalised version of The Times has been available since c.2005, from Thomson-Gale, covering the years 1785-1985. It is a great resource, which is well worth exploring, as it is (or certainly seems to be) well indexed.
I did one quick test and new digitalised version cross referenced so it should be a great benefit to Footnote users, and maybe more British newspapers will be added in the future - there is certainly plenty of scope.
I'm just tackling a Feb 1766 issue of The Gloucester Journal with coverage from St. Christopher from the previous Novemeber (news took longer to travel in 1766) of the Stamp Act Riots, amongst other events.
Best Regards

The London Times has been available as part of Godfrey Library's offerings for over a year. It is a phenomenal resource. Whoever did the scanning has some system for producing almost perfect images, far, far better than most others. And this of course has resulted in far more accurate OCR.
