Did Your Ancestors Come From canton Ticino?

If your ancestors came from canton Ticino, Switzerland, swissinfo would like to hear from you. The English service of swissinfo plans to produce an interactive, multimedia series of reports on Ticino with descendants of Ticino emigrants as the main target audience.

The aim is to come into contact with second, third and fourth generation descendants who use English as their main language and would like to know more about the home region of their ancestors.

Details are available at http://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/front/Ticino_ancestry.html?siteSect=105&sid=9085883&ty=st&front=mk.

My Grandfather and his brother lived there. There names were Erminio and Domenico respectively.

Domenico was a priest.

My Grandmother's sister married a Henri LaFranchi. His roots were in canton Ticino!!

I have ancestors from Bedigliora in Canton Ticino. Giovanni Vannotti (born abt 1837) settled in Australia. His parents remained in Ticino - Matteo Vannotti and Maria Bertila.

I've got a ancestor who came from Ticino to The Netherlands.
I just have a little information about him.
He called himself in Holland "Franciscus den Rector" and he was born ca 1734 in Malvaglia.

Is there someone who knows more about him and his parents?

Thanks
Judith

My ancestors came from Carena, Melera, Melirolo, Pianezzo and St. Antonio of the Canton Ticino. The famiies are TAMAGNI, BULETTI, SARINA & CODIROLI. Many immigrated to California to Mendocino, Sonoma, Napa and Tehama Counties in early 1900's.

My Grandfather Leone Guiseppi JACOMELLI,I believe came from Ticino. I was always told by my father that his Dad (Leone) had run away from home (somewhere in the Lake Magiori area) at the age of 13 and came to England where he eventually married my Grandmother. He died at the early age of 38 in 1915 leaving three young children, one of which was my father. I understood he had been employed as the Head Waiter at Claridges Hotel in London. Although I have records of his marriage & death, very strangley he does not appear on any census records that I can see. Leone's marriage certificate shows his father as Frank Jacomelli (not Franco?), which makes me wonder whether he did 'run away' from home. My Dad changed the family name of Jacomelli to Wood in 1944 because of anti Italian feeling.

My daughter's 3rd great grandfather, Nicolas Treosti came from Gordola, Canton Ticino to Los Angeles in 1875, where he settled and lived until his death. He married the daughter of Agustin Olvera, first county judge of Los Angeles and for whom "Olvera Street" is named - in Los Angeles in 1879 and they had four children. I cannot find any record of other Treosti immigrants to California, just to Washington state and these are from Italy.

My great grandfather Luca Marci is from Frasco which I believe is in the canton Ticino, Switzerland.

Hello Barbara Chamberlain,

My 3rd great grandfather was also Nicholas Treosti. I have my grandmother on audio tape describing Maria Olvera and her family to me. My gradmother's Mother was Clara Treosti. She was one of the four children Nicholas and Maria had together; Paul, Pete, Manual and Clara. Agnes Treosti married Joesph Anthony LaCabe in the early twenties and gave birth to my Father, Ronald Richard LaCabe in East Los Angeles (now deceased). My grandmother describes how Nicholas came to Los Angeles (speaking 5 different languages) as a shoe maker. He later opened a market in old town Los Angeles and eventually went into realestate. My grandmother credits Nicholas for petitioning the renaming of Vine street to "Olvera Street", in honor of Maria, not Agustin. In the storey she even describes how Nicholas was hit by a car in process of doing this! Which Son is your granddaughter from? Do these name track for you and your family history?

Keith LaCabe:

I am going to leave my contact information with this comment but if it is not shown, I suppose we can continue to correspond here. YES, your story is of the same family that my daughter and son descend from. Their direct line goes back to Manuel and his first wife, "Jennie" or Eugenia Ramirez via their daughter, Priscilla. I am extremely excited to read your response and would love to have further contact. I have just made contact with another link to this family; my daughter's father's cousin who has some postcards sent to a family member (maybe Nicolas?)from Switzerland but written in Italian. She plans to send me copies soon. I would LOVE to hear your tape! bgamar@earthlink.net

Barbara Chamberlain,

I will write you at earthlink! Thanks so much to Eastman for hosting this terrific page. This is the magic of the internet that has nothing to do with commerce. I will digitize the tape of my grandmother and send along. It may take a bit, but not to worry. Also, I will have to clear-up one mistake I made immediately upon re-reading my message to you. My grandmother's maiden name was Davidson, not Treosti. Sorry I missed that. Still the duaghter of Clara and Nicholas, sister to Manuel, but her father's name was Haliburton Davidson from Canada. I look forward to further sharing of our ancestory.

I too have Ticino ancestors: All came to California and raised there families:

Pedrotti, Pronini, Capucetti, Ghisletta, Tomasi

Anyone interested in these and the off shoots of these families just email and I will try to help..
