I for one am NOT at all impressed with this website. I find it tedious to search and when I did get some hits I found that one of their wonderful members had taken a large section of MY database that has taken me years of hard work to put together and this person calls it his own as part of his database of 310,000+.

Now you tell me, how can anyone find that many connections?

Roger Vaughn

I enjoy the my heritage service. They have a way to match between trees and I've been able to add a few people to my tree this way after being stuck for a while. i was matched with a family from Argentina who was disconnected from my family some 60 years ago.

Linda---I have a tree on MyHeritage and I set it up to be a private account, that only those persons I invite to see it can view it. If you have concerns about others using your hard earned material- you should privatize your information, too.

Linda

Hi Sharon,

My tree is not on My Heritage. I have my gedcom uploaded to RootsWeb. I would never make a private tree because I feel the point is to share information BUT going along with that I expect that a person interested in my family lines would have the courtesy to contact me. I wouldn't care if it was a few people but we are talking of about 10 generations of one line that has taken me several years to research. This person at My Heritage has a database of some 310,000 people - that to me means that this person is either a name collector and not a real genealogist or one of those so called "professionals" that finds someone else's work and calls it their own. In either case, my information is being misrepresented and I am not being given credit for my research.

I have given others permission to add information in my database to theirs and in return they have also provided me with information. THAT is what genealogy is all about. So making a tree private is only hurting yourself. People quickly become frustrated when they are unable to see if there might be a connection and I have had instances in which I have attempted to contact the owner of the private tree and never heard from them. At least if the information was available to view I would be able to see if there was a possibility of a match and I would then have more information to continue researching.

Arbitrarily just adding someone's database to your own without checking out the information and finding sources to back it up is not what research and genealogy is all about. It is quite apparent given the size of the database that this person who has seen fit to just take my information does not know the first thing about research or courtesy. Even more devious is the fact that by removing a few AKAS that I had in parenthesis it is obvious that this person thinks that they are making it their own. Naturally I have tried to contact this person and of course he hasn't bothered to reply. My only satisfaction is that I can prove it is my work and the one way I have of not giving it all away is that I do not include my sources with my data. I, however, make it very clear on my gedcom pages that I am more than willing to share them with anyone who contacts me. This is so that I know who is interested in my information and so hopefully a new connection will be made.
