Update: Family Historian for Windows now Available in the U.S. at Target

On November 14, I published an announcement concerning Family Historian, a genealogy program for Windows that has been very popular in England. In fact, I reviewed the program a couple of times in past years. The article I published a few days ago was an announcement that the program will now be sold in the United States, especially at Target stores.

One item that was notably absent in the announcement was any mention of price. Several people asked about the price in comments at the end of the article. Today I did some on-site investigative journalism: I visited a local Target store.

Indeed, Family Historian 3 was sitting on the shelf and is available for purchase. The price at my local Target store is $49.99.

I have no idea if the prices are exactly the same in all Target stores or not, although I suspect they are.

You can read the earlier announcement at http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2008/11/family-historia.html.

I did go to my local Target here in the Ft. Worth area on this past Saturday. Found it on the shelf for $49.99 and bought a copy.

I have been a long time Legacy user, I have to say that I was some what disappointed with this program. I mainly tried the creating a report option. The first thing I noticed was that there is no .pdf output and the reports do not create an Index at the end.

Also in the package I bought when I went to install a window came up asking for the registration key. It said that it could be found on a leaflet inside the box or a slip of paper inside the CD envelope. I found a leaflet with a number on it but every time that I entered the number it kept telling me it was invalid. After closer inspection of the leaflet, I saw it was a registration number for 6 months of an online subscription. I could find no other paper in the box. I packaged everything up and went back to the store.

I traded it for another copy, but opened that copy before I left the store. Still only found the same leaflet as in the other box. The clerk and I did finally find the registration number printed very faintly on the front of the User Manual.

I am not ready to give up on it, but kinda have a feeling of wasted money.

Stick with it - Family Historian is a great program, and the support from the user group and from the programmer are excellent!

If you want the best genealogy software program, version 4 of RootsMagic will soon be released. The new version looks to be a phenomenal update of an already WONDERFUL program, and will rise to whatever is your level of expertise. To see previews of the new version go to http://blog.rootsmagic.com/ That should probably be enough in itself to convince you. But there is excellent technical support at http://www.rootsmagic.com/ where questions posted on the message board are usually answered within minutes, and I speak from experience! Or just search the board for your question which may have previously been asked. I am a long-time user of RootsMagic, and never have any of the complaints of those who use other programs. Plus the cost is only $29.95 for the current version. Those in my genealogy society who have used the "big-name" programs are now starting to convert, and beginners are thrilled to see how easy it is to use. You will not be sorry.

A free 30 day trial of Family Historian can be downloaded from their website and if you want to purchase it at the end of the 30 days, you can purchase it online from their website.
