There is no better source of information on the early years of a community than its newspaper. Now a new resource is going online, giving lots of details about the early days of Victoria, British Columbia.
The old Daily Colonist newspaper, which merged with the Victoria Times in 1980 to become the Times Colonist, will go online this week.
The new site will offer the first 100,000 pages published by the Colonist, covering every issue from Dec. 11, 1858 to 1910. The date range is key, because it covers the years when Victoria was the largest city in the province, and the Colonist was the largest newspaper.
The pages will be searchable, and access will be free through www.timescolonist.com.
The new archive is scheduled to go online Thursday, December 11, 2008. (Tomorrow.)
