This release is the biggest disappointment to many UK researchers. Not only does it suffer from the usual transcription errors, but the number of typographical errors are unbelievable. In one search which produced about 250 results, there were at least 10 obvious typos - Tohmas for Thomas, Willaim for William, Calara for Clara etc. Also, in this initial release only one page of up to possible seven pages is available to view.
The cost is also causing a lot of controversy. It must be one of the most expensive genealogical sites on the web - costing over 1 GBP for a transcription and over 3.5 GBP for an image.
All very disappointing.

I'll wait for ancestry.com to finish their transcription and have access with my membership.

Keep in mind that not all counties are yet online, which may be important if, like me, most of your ancestors and collaterals are in those "not yet" counties. The problem is that you have to buy those credits and they don't last forever (I seem to have recently forfeited 71 credits because I ran out of things to do) and Find My Past is being coy about just when those additional counties will be up and running. So, I think I'll wait until it's complete and do it all at once. Hopefully, it'll be soon!

What people don't seem to realise is that it costs many millions of pounds/dollars to put a census online. Who is going to pay for it? Dick has written about this subject several times. This census has 10 times as many images as the previous census. It is expensive, but only the same as downloading wills and medal cards from our National Archives website. We have been spoilt by having less expensive access to previous censuses.

The other 7 images are of very little use generally, except for the 'List' which records the houses on the enumerators 'walk' and includes names of each Head of Household. I think these will become available once all the data has been added and the site has proved to be stable. I also think additional functionality will be added - ie wildcard searches.

As to transcription errors, there are bound to be some, but at least you can correct them, including the 'mass' errors and they will be corrected very quickly. I can guarantee there will be many, many more errors in the Ancestry version!

Zak

Does anyone know when the 1911 census will be available from Ancestry?

The high cost will certainly deter many from extensive searches and if production cost truely demand this level of pricing, then kudos to the National Archives of Ireland for their commitment (with their Canadian partners) to bringing the 1901 and 1911 Census of Ireland online FREE to all.
The Dublin records which I have used extensively both in the original in Dublin and online are remarkably error free online in so far as my experience goes and I look forward to the successive release of other Counties.

Luke

Still no word on when Ancestry is getting access to the 1911 Census. No time soon by the looks of it.

But at least the FindMyPast subscription version is coming in a few weeks. I couldn't bring myself to buy the credits, but I am looking forward to getting the subscription version.
