Leslie Wagner has some great tips on how to visit cemetery and find genealogical-relevant information there. She advises that "Take a camera to photograph the headstone. Headstone rubbings will actually cause chemical damage to the stone."
You can read Leslie's article in the Dallas History Examiner at http://www.examiner.com/x-2242-Dallas-History-Examiner~y2009m2d23-Helpful-hints-for-visiting-a-cemetery.
That's good advice. When genealogists go to cemeteries they should just take pictures and not put anything on the headstone.

Very good tips. For more cemetery research tips, including cleaning and the symbology on the stones, visit my web site: www.ShoeStringGenealogy.com. Use the Site Map (right column), and once there you should find 3 presentations about Research, Cleaning and Headstone Symbols. Dead men DO tell tales.
Happy Dae.

If you have a GPS, you could also mark the coordinates in your research. Especially if it's an interesting or historic grave. You might want to post it on a number of sites available for that purpose so others can find it.
