I'm not so sure. The seven libraries I'm most familiar with don't have that kind of budget, either. One director has even laid off professional librarians just to meet her budget.

I love the technology, however, and I hope they can get the price down soon.

Family History Department's Micrographic Unit and Brigham Young University has them. How else do you think they have Family History Archive up and running in no time?

They will be very glad to help you with getting your books, providing you're not violating copyright laws.

Its a great to hear about such technology but well out of my budget ! Which is a shame given the number of newspapers and documents I'd like to scan and make available.

I think several libraries should share the cost of one of these and share the use of it. The larger the library, the larger the share of the cost. Small libraries would benefit from access they couldn't afford alone. They would also share the cost of training staff. The equipment would have a permanent home where partner libraries come to use it. Cooperation, coordination, conservation.

Wow - what a device!

This is not quite on topic - but the desire to digitse my existing family records is becoming almost obsessive! I've completed the task of digitsing my "family history collection" and am now desperate to tackle (many) of the thousands of 6x4 family photos.

Using a flat bed scanner will take me years. Does any one know of a reasonably priced scanning solution for a job like this - one where I can stack 10-20 photos and press one button?

Libraries and serious individuals should look at the new Plustek A300 - http://www.plustek.com/product/A300.asp
We (Archive Digital Books Australasia) are scanning books at up to 400 pages an hour using the book edge facility or 600 pages an hour 2 pages up when used as a regular flatbed - if the book allows. We are scanning and processing 30,000 pages a month on this (and some other older book and flatbed scanners).

We have looked at the Atiz, but probably get get higher throughput and handle tightly bound books better on the A300 - all at a tenth of the price of the Atiz and 1% of the price of a Kirtas, which I have also seen. And it is very portable.
