Dear Colleagues,
I wish to advise you of my retirement as the Librarian and Archivist of Canada effective April 24th 2009. Although retiring, I will continue to be active as I fulfill my mandate as President of the International Council of Archives, and work on projects of interest to libraries and archives.
I wish to advise you of my retirement as the Librarian and Archivist of Canada effective April 24th 2009. Although retiring, I will continue to be active as I fulfill my mandate as President of the International Council of Archives, and work on projects of interest to libraries and archives.
It was a special privilege to work with Roch Carrier and our entire staff team in creating the Library and Archives of Canada. We described it then as a voyage of discovery, exploring the possibilities of an integrated knowledge institution serving Canadians in the 21st Century. This has been a collective effort, reflecting the ideas, commitment and skills of all staff. The vision we developed together is a compelling one, of broad interest nationally and internationally. It is boldly proclaimed in the preamble to our legislation and it has inspired partners and stakeholders alike in working with us. I encourage all of you to sustain the momentum.
Advice and encouragement from national, international and public service colleagues has been both beneficial and deeply appreciated. The opportunities to meet noted Canadians and visitors have been enjoyable, but working daily with so many knowledgable and creative people is what I will treasure most. Almost every visitor I brought through our buildings commented on how impressed they were by the obvious dedication of our staff. I have been proud to be associated with each of you. Thank you and best wishes.
The Government will make an announcement shortly regarding my successor.

Par la présente, je désire vous informer que je prends ma retraite à titre de Bibliothécaire et Archiviste du Canada le 24 avril 2009. Quoique retraité, je demeurerai actif dans le domaine. Ainsi, je m’acquitterai de mon mandat de président du Conseil international des Archives et je m’investirai dans des projets d’intérêt pour les bibliothèques et les archives.
Ce fut un insigne honneur de travailler avec Roch Carrier et toute notre équipe à la création de Bibliothèque et Archives Canada. Au départ, nous avions décrit l’aventure comme un voyage de découverte, une exploration des possibilités que peut offrir une institution de savoir intégrée au service des Canadiens au XXIe siècle. L’effort fut collectif et reflète les idées, l’engagement et la compétence de tous les membres du personnel. La vision que nous avons développée ensemble est convaincante et d’un vaste intérêt à l’échelle nationale et internationale. Elle s’affiche en toutes lettres dans le préambule de notre loi et inspire nos partenaires, comme d’autres parties intéressées, à travailler avec nous. Je vous encourage tous à poursuivre sur cette lancée.
Les conseils et les encouragements que m’ont prodigués les collègues de la fonction publique et de la scène nationale et internationale m’ont été à la fois bénéfiques et réconfortants. J’ai apprécié les occasions de rencontrer des Canadiens et des visiteurs de renom, mais je chéris davantage la possibilité que j’ai eue de travailler au quotidien avec un si grand nombre de personnes bien informées et créatives. Presque tous les visiteurs que j’ai accompagnés le long de nos corridors ont dit à quel point ils étaient impressionnés par la conscience professionnelle manifeste de nos employés. J’ai été extrêmement fier d’être associé à chacun d’entre vous. Je vous remercie et vous offre mes meilleurs vœux.
Le gouvernement annoncera sous peu le nom de mon successeur.

First, he made the Ontario Archives in Toronto very user-friendly.
When he went to Ottawa, I breathed another sigh of relief.
He has done so much for genealogists.

Ian has done a wonderful job and is leaving behind very large shoes to fill. I wish him the very best in his retirement and hope that his successor can rise to the challenge of continuing Ian's good work!
