Nine years ago -- back in May 2000 -- Megan Smolenyak Smolenyak started the Honoring Our Ancestors Grants Program. It's a modest program run and funded by Megan with the help of her good-natured husband, Brian. The only requirement is that the grants be for some sort of genealogically-oriented initiative.
Megan and Brian just celebrated the ninth anniversary of the grant program and Megan has written an interesting retrospect of some of the grants. I found it to be interesting reading and you might also if you go to http://rootstelevision.typepad.com/roots_world/2009/06/9-years-of-genealogy-grants.html.
Dick: The San Diego Genealogical Society is exploring grants as a means of increasing our annual revenue so that we can afford a larger, more centralized building to house our offices and growing library. We also need to emphasize to our members the importance of remembering us in their gift giving through their wills and trusts. It would be interesting to hear what other Genealogical Societs have done in these areas, especially if they have been successful! This might be an interesting topic for you to explore. Thanks

The Okfuskee County History Center is seeking information on grants in order to establish a Genealogy work center here in our museum. We are located in Okemah, Oklahoma, home of Woody Guthrie (folk singer) and William Jean Pogue (astonaught). We are a community of approximately 3000 citizens located right in the middle of the old Indian Territory, lots of history and interesting facts can be found and we only want to establish a small research library for our non-profit organization. Anyone out there that can give us an idea of what we will need as far as material and money will be appreciated.
