The following announcement was written by Jake Gehring, President of the Association of Professional Genealogists:
To all members of the Association of Professional Genealogists,
For several years the APG Board has discussed the possibility of a “members only” APG Mail List. Two years ago we began an experiment with the APG Forums, a web-based discussion feature on the Members Only section of www.apgen.org, but this offering has not been heavily used. Much of our feedback on the forums expresses the value of convenient, e-mail-based communication.
As a result, the APG Board voted to create two mail lists, one for members only and another, which we call the “APG Public Mailing List.”
Both mailing lists will be hosted on APG’s servers and both mail lists will be archived at www.apgen.org. Archives for the “APG Public Mailing List” will be open and available to any visitor to the APG web site. The members only list will be available to APG membership. The current APG mailing list hosted by RootsWeb will be discontinued, but its archives will remain open and available.
Neither mailing list will be moderated, but subscribers to both lists must abide by an APG Mailing List Code of Conduct, which addresses issues of etiquette, copyright, privacy, and civil discourse. Subscribers who do not follow the code of conduct in postings will receive warnings and may lose posting and/or reading privileges if problems persist.
We hope that many of you will sign up for both mailing lists. The member list will serve as a discussion forum for issues specific to the organization. The “APG Public Mailing List” will be a great forum for the exchange of ideas, advice, thoughts on research problems as well as more general issues.
Visit http://www.apgen.org/publications/publiclist/index.html to sign up for the APG Public Mailing List.
Go to the Members Only area of the APG website to sign up for the APG Members Only Mailing List.
In order to restrict the APG Member Mail List to APG members, the system requires subscription from an e-mail account that matches the e-mail address in your APG member profile. To visit your APG member profile and/or update your e-mail address, please visit http://apgen.org/members/update.html in the Members Only section of the APG website.
Thank you.
Jake Gehring
APG President
