Don't go to the Wisconsin Vital Records Office in Madison on Friday to obtain copies of birth, death, marriage or divorce certificates or to make genealogy appointments. The office will be closed for state-mandated involuntary employee furloughs. The Vital Records Office will reopen on Monday.
The state budget requires all university and state employees to take furloughs to help close a $6.6 billion shortfall. The Vital Records Office plans to close on August 14, September 4, October 12 and November 27 to meet the mandate. Closing are also planned in 2010 on January 15, February 15, April 2, and May 28.
