Laura DeGrazia, CG, President of the Board for Certification of Genealogists, announced the retirement of two respected trustees, effective on October 12th, 2009.
Shirley Langdon Wilcox, CG, of Arlington, Virginia, served on the Board for nine years. She became certified in 1973 having graduated in 1971 from the three-week program of the Institute on Genealogical Research sponsored by American University and the National Archives. Her past positions include President of the National Genealogical Society (NGS), 1996-2000; President of the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG),1991-93; President of Fairfax (VA) Genealogical Society, 1986-89; President 1973 and 1975-76 of the Prince George's County (MD) Genealogical Society (PGCGS) of which she was also a 1969 charter member. Her service to genealogy has been recognized by the following awards: Fellow of the National Genealogical Society in 2001; NGS President's Citation 2003; NGS Board Award 2005; APG Grahame T. Smallwood Jr. Award of Merit in 1995; an Honorary Life Membership in the Prince George's County Genealogical Society (PGCGS) in 1996; and the Jane Roush McCafferty Award of Excellence from PGCGS in 1985. Currently she serves as President of the Virginia Genealogical Society, Assistant Historian of the Mayflower Descendants in the District of Columbia; Hall of Fame Chairman and Bible Records Chairman for NGS;. For 16 years she has been Verifying Genealogist of National Society Colonial Dames of America in the District of Columbia and for 10 years she has led the NGS research trip to Salt Lake City.According to President DeGrazia, "Jim and Shirley are committed to promoting standards in genealogy. Their contributions as trustees have helped BCG address its mission, and we are grateful for their ongoing dedication to scholarly genealogical research."
Jim W. Faulkinbury, CG, of Sacramento, California, finished a three-year term on the Board of Trustees. His BA in Mathematics and his MBA are from California State University in Sacramento and he holds a certificate in project management from the University of California, Davis. He was first certified by the Board in 1980. A specialist in California records and a lineage genealogist, Jim is a member of the National Society Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) Genealogy Committee, State Secretary of the California Society SAR, Secretary, past Registrar, and past President of his local chapter of the SAR, Past State Genealogist and State Registrar of the California Society of the Order of Founders and Patriots of America, and Registrar of the Sacramento Society Children of the American Revolution. He publications include The Foreign-Born Voters of California in 1872 (including names, ages, national origin, and naturalization data on over 61,000 voters on the voter rolls in 1872), and the California chapter in Ann S. Lainhart’s State Census Records. He has also produced an online index to his database of over 363,000 vital statistics he extracted from the San Francisco Morning Call newspaper for the years 1869 through 1900. This valuable resource helps researchers cope with the loss of those public records destroyed in the great earthquake and fire of 1906.
