The digital age has transformed thousands of hand-written Culpeper court records dating as far back as 180 years. The county’s complete chancery causes from 1829 to 1913 — 164,000 images in all — are now available to view online at the Library of Virginia web site.
Chancery causes often addressed matters like the dissolution of business partnerships, divorces, land disputes or divisions of estates. The Culpeper records also contain slave listings pertaining to the buying and selling of slaves or black individuals left as property in wills.
