I have written before about Mozy, the online backup service, as well as about several of Mozy's competitors. I have also always stressed that having only one form of backup is insufficient; everyone needs to have multiple backups, stored on different media and stored in different places. Until now, Mozy satisfied only one of those requirements: the company provided an online backup service with data stored in Mozy's data centers. That has now changed.
The newly-introduced Mozy 2.0 continues to provide online backup service in professionally managed data centers with up to 2 gigabytes of storage space provided free of charge. However, the new Mozy 2.0 adds new features that will appeal to long-time users, including the ability to create automatic backups to external drives. The new hard drive backup is called 2xProtect. Now you can "have your cake and eat it, too:" high-speed, convenient backups to a hard drive on your desk as well as off-site backups that are not threatened by local disasters, such as fire, flood, hurricane, or burst water pipes.
Mozy 2.0 lets you pause or throttle an online backup on the computer if you want to do something else with your broadband link, such as have a Skype phone call. It also reportedly backs up around 25 per cent faster than the previous version, and the user interface has been improved to be simpler and quicker to use.
The earlier version of Mozy is available for both Windows and Macintosh. Mozy 2.0 is a free download for Windows systems only, with a Mac 2.0 version promised to follow "later this year." The Mozy software is available free of charge, and two gigabytes of storage is also provided free of charge. Pricing for unlimited plans starts at $54.95 per year.

Here is the company's press release that announces Mozy 2.0:
Mozy Delivers Faster, Easier Service and Adds Local Backup to Consumers and Businesses with Mozy 2.0
New Mozy™ 2xProtect™ Feature Delivers Both Local and Internet-based Backup, Provides Ultimate Assurance Against Data Loss
Seattle – May 18, 2010 – MozyTM, the industry-leading online backup service from EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC), today announced general availability of MozyHome® 2.0 and MozyPro® 2.0 on Windows. New enhancements include faster upload speeds and decreased bandwidth usage, new convenience and access features, and Mozy 2xProtect™ – a new feature which allows Mozy users to back up to a local external drive in addition to Mozy’s online data centres at no additional cost.
“Every computer is vulnerable to failure and data loss,” said Russ Stockdale, Chief Marketing Officer at Mozy. “Mozy 2.0 provides consumers and businesses a simple, automatic and secure way to back up all their information. With Mozy 2xProtect, customers can achieve significant levels of protection against data loss by combining the speed of local backup with the protection of the cloud over the Internet.”
In response to customer feedback, Mozy has made significant backup performance enhancements to the service. Mozy 2.0 customers can achieve up to 25 per cent faster backups compared with previous versions. Mozy also redesigned the service’s interface to simplify set up and use. Although advanced configuration options still allow power users to maintain the level of functionality they require to protect their data, the new Mozy interface makes it easier for consumers and businesses to verify that files have been backed up and stored securely.
Mozy 2.0 with its new 2xProtect feature extends Mozy’s leadership in the online backup market and underscores the company’s commitment to creating simple, yet innovative new solutions to protect irreplaceable files – such as digital family photos and videos, music collections, and business documents – against data loss.
Mozy 2xProtect provides this capability by automatically backing up files to an external drive in addition to a Mozy data centre. The result is a sound backup solution that involves having both a local and an offsite copy of one’s personal or business information.
Since its launch in 2005, Mozy has become the most trusted online backup service in the world, serving more than one million users and 50,000 business customers. Partnerships include Cox Business, Comcast, McAfee, ChinaTelecom and Clearlybusiness, a wholly owned subsidiary of Barclays Bank.
