Members of Bedford Genealogical Society, Inc. sued the museum, claiming in U.S. District Court in Lynchburg that the museum misrepresented itself as the owner of cemetery records. Members of the newly incorporated society asked the museum to turn over money from the sales and to pay unspecified damages. The records are sold on CD and in book form. Access is offered with a museum membership.
Judge Norman Moon dismissed the lawsuit. Moon wrote that Bedford Genealogical Society Inc., incorporated in February 2009, was not the successor to the unincorporated volunteer group that started gathering the records for the museum in the early 1990s.
