In the book, author Ann Hart suggests "You don’t necessarily need any
science courses or degrees to start or operate this category of small
business emphasizing reporting, media, and communications only service
that serves the holistic, genealogy, and DNA for ancestry customers
looking for explanations about origins or possible family links in plain
language of their DNA-for-ancestry tests. It can be done online, at
home, or in an office. What should you charge per test? About $200 is
affordable. You’ll have to pay a laboratory to do the testing. Work out
your budget with the laboratory."
Hart also writes, "Many successful entrepreneurs in the DNA testing for
ancestry businesses started with a hobby of looking up family history
records—genealogy. So if you’re a history buff, or if your hobby is
family history research, oral history, archaeology, or genealogy, you
now can turn to DNA testing."
I will insert a few words of caution here. I am not sure that I agree with the author on the ease of getting into
the DNA testing business and I am also not sure that potential customers
will flock to your (online) store. Yet, the idea sounds interesting.
