I have written a number of times about Mozy, an online backup service. I would suggest that everyone should have backups of the files on their computers but it seems doubly importnt for genealogists concerned with long-term preservation of their data.
Mozy has now rreleased a mobile app for Apple's handheld devices. Mozy customers can now download, view, and access their backed up files securely from their iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. This is also a great way to be able to access the files on your home computer when you are traveling. If the file is backed up by Mozy, you can download a copy of it to your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad at ny time, wherever you are. All you need is Internet connectivity. The new app also allows emailing a file, opening in other applications, and viewing photos or sharing them to Facebook.
You can find the Mozy iPhone app in the iTunes App Store (either from iTunes or your iOS device).
Three restrictions apply:
- The Mozy app is listed in iTunes only for users in the US & Canada. (A global update is planned to release soon.) I am in England at the moment and cannotaccess the new app.
- The Mozy app currently only works with MozyHome accounts. (An update for MozyPro customers is already under development.)
- If you have opted to encrypt your backups with your own private key, this version cannot decrypt your files.

Mozy promises that an Android version is currently in the works, and it should be released to the public very soon.
