Food! Beverages! Time with friends! Door prizes! Win an iPod Touch! What better way to spend Saturday evening after the close of the NGS Conference in Charleston?
For years, I have hosted dinners shortly after the closing of many of the larger genealogy conferences. I always invite the readers of this newsletter and their guests. I am delighted to announce that there will be another such dinner on May 14, 2011, immediately after the end of the National Genealogical Society's Family History Conference in Charleston, South Carolina.
YOU are invited!
These EOGN (Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter) dinners are for those who want to wind down over a meal with other genial genealogists on a Saturday evening after the conference has ended. Each dinner is (very) informal, usually noisy, and is a place to relax amongst friends after the hubbub of the conference. In this case, the word "friends" might mean long-time friends or perhaps new friends you meet at the conference or even meet for the first time at the Saturday evening dinner. After all, genealogists are a friendly group!
There is no agenda, no speeches, no program, no PowerPoint slides, and little else. All you can expect is good food, time spent with good friends, and a chance to win a door prize. The grand prize will be an Apple iPod Touch. Past dinners have been noisy affairs, and I expect this one will be the same.
The EOGN Dinner will be held on Saturday, May 14, at 7 PM in a private dining room at the Hilton Garden Inn. That hotel is immediately adjacent to the North Charleston Convention Center in Charleston, South Carolina. The hotel is connected to the convention center by an elevated walkway. In case of rain, you won't even need your umbrella! Anyone with mobility difficulties should be able to reach the banquet room in the Hilton Garden Inn by wheelchair.
If you have ever attended any of the previous EOGN dinners, I hope you enjoyed it. If you have not been able to attend a past EOGN dinner, ask anyone who has. Hopefully, we can repeat the experience this time and perhaps even exceed past years' experiences.
NOTE: In order to guarantee enough seats in the banquet room, registrations are REQUIRED. You MUST register and pay in advance. Registrations are available NOW!
The hotel assures me they can handle any size crowd if we provide at least three days' notice. Unlike some past years, there will be no shortage of available seats as long as you register no later than 12 midnight Eastern U.S. time on Tuesday, May 10.
If you plan on bringing guests, make sure you order a ticket for each person in your party. It will be embarrassing to tell your spouse that you are going out to dinner with others while your spouse is left alone in the hotel room because "you forgot!" If there are two of you, you need two tickets.
The registration fee is $45. That includes the meal and the desserts but not sodas, beer, wine, or mixed drinks. A cash bar will be available for your drink orders.
You can register online right now at http://www.eogn.com/charleston-dinner, and you MUST print your ticket and bring it with you. When you register, you will be able to print the ticket on your own printer.
Please bring the ticket with you. Not only is it your admission to the dinner, but the tickets will be collected at the door and used as entry slips for the door prizes! Anyone without a ticket cannot be admitted and also will not qualify for the prize drawings.
NOTE: If you don't have a printer, register first and then notify me at http://eogn.com/support/. I will print the ticket for you and will give it to you at the conference, prior to the dinner.
Here are the details:
Dinner will be buffet style. The total charge for everything (except drinks) will be $45 per person. You can pay at the time you make the reservation and print your ticket at http://www.eogn.com/charleston-dinner
You can "vote" for your favorite dishes. The hotel is providing many options, so I created a poll and am asking you to "vote" for the dishes you would prefer at http://goo.gl/gmtFI
A cash bar will also be available for sodas and adult beverages. Those beverages are not included in the dinner price.
I expect to have a number of door prizes for the attendees. The grand door prize will be an Apple iPod Touch! This is the handheld computer with a 960-by-640 pixel Retina display that is gorgeous to look at. It allows you to listen to music, play games, and take pictures, as well as record, edit, and share stunning HD video. Because it is always with you, you'll never miss a photo opportunity. The same iPod Touch also will run most any of the 350,000+ applications available in the App Store, including several genealogy applications. You can keep your genealogy database in your pocket!
Again, registrations will close at 12 midnight Eastern U.S. time on Tuesday, May 10. You can make your reservation and print your ticket now at http://www.eogn.com/charleston-dinner
I hope you will enjoy the EOGN dinner. See you there!
