Michael John Neill has extracted Commissioner Astrue's comments regarding genealogical use of the Social Security Master Death Index and posted it to his web site. The entire testimony was lengthy. Michael extracted the pieces of interest to genealogists.
It strikes me that Commissioner Astrue's remarks concerning genealogists are condescending, at best. OK, let's be blunt: his remarks are insulting.
He indicates that genealogists are over-reacting and that there may be a need to close the index for 10 or even 75 years.

We all owe "thanks" to Michael for doing this.
