Some 1940 U.S. census images are available now on MyHeritage.com and all of the remaining images should be available within 30 hours!
Are you frustrated by the slow response on the official 1940 U.S. census site? You do have alternatives. You can find some 1940 census records right now at MyHeritage.com/1940census. The site is NOT busy or overloaded. When I checked, images appeared within a second or two on this flaky wi-fi network connection I am using in an RV campground.
The image to the right is from the 1940 New York census. You can click on the image to see a larger version. I was able to download this image within 2 or 3 seconds.
MyHeritage.com appears to be serious about placing the census images online. In fact, the images for New York and Rhode Island are available NOW. As I write these words, the images for Pennsylvania and Illinois are expected to go live within minutes. About 50% of the U.S. states will be loaded overnight and the remainder of the images are expected to become available within 30 hours or so.
The MyHeritage.com crew obviously has been working for weeks, perhaps months, to prepare for these images. After all, the storage space alone must be several terabytes (thousands of gigabytes) and that amount of storage doesn't become available overnight.
The images will first appear on MyHeritage.com/1940census but will also appear later on WorldVitalRecords.com and FamilyLink.com. All three sites are owned by the same parent company: MyHeritage.
Again, some 1940 U.S. census images are available right now at MyHeritage.com/1940census and the remainder of the images for the entire U.S. will be available within 30 hours or so.
