We are in danger of losing our regional accents. Radio, television, movies, and other modern influences are homogenizing our accents. Columbia University graduate student Joseph Hall is working to preserve recordings made in 1939 of residents who lived in and around the Smoky Mountains.
The recordings will be available online. Montgomery said the website will list the full name and hometowns of those interviewed and he expects it to be especially interesting to genealogy enthusiasts.
