The Detroit Public Library's web site now contains an index to original records held at the Burton Historical Collection. These records do not include deaths that occurred within the City of Detroit. All indexes compiled by Ruth McMahon.
The indexes are broken into four differnt PDF files. You first must click on one of the following:
- 1934-1939
- 1940-1944
- 1945-1949
- 1950-1953
That opens a PDF file containing all the index entries for those years.
You can locate an entry in the index but, like any index, it only contains abbreviated information. To order a complete copy of a death record, you can complete an online form which is also a PDF file. You must print the form locally and send it in regular mail, enclosing $15.00 per record. Surprisingly, there is no capability to order records and pay online. All orders must be mailed and payment must be made by check or money order.
You can access the Wayne County Death Record Index at http://www.detroitpubliclibrary.org/wayne-county-death-record-index.
