A company in California owns the Mount Vernon Memorial Park in Fair Oaks. The company is named Dignity. Keep that in mind.
Lillas Hawkins found a problem when she went to visit her husband's grave two weeks ago. Another woman was buried next to her husband in the plot that Mrs. Hawkins thought was reserved for her own use someday. When she pointed out the error to a cemetery worker, she says he responded, "We are in terrible trouble."
It seems that the cemetery's previous owners sold the cemetery plot twice in the 1980s. Mr. Hawkins was the first to occupy the plot but the second person to be buried there was a woman from the other owner(s). According to Hawkins, Dignity also said that digging up the strange woman "isn't an option," but that they'd be willing to dig up Hawkins' husband and rebury him somewhere else. Otherwise, she can be buried on top of him.
After a local television station broadcast the story, Dignity issued a statement: "We are deeply sorry for any distress this situation has caused the Hawkins family. We are doing everything we can to resolve the issue to the Hawkins family's satisfaction."
