I called the hotel at (801) 531-7500, asked for reservations, and explained the difficulty to a very pleasant lady. She asked if I was attending a convention. After a bit of discussion, she told me the hotel had blocked out a large number of rooms for the RootsTech conference attendees and those rooms can not be reserved through the web site. However, she quickly gave me a guaranteed reservation for the nights I wanted.
That's good news but here is even better news: the conference "special rate" that is available only by telephone and by asking for the RootsTech conference rate is considerably cheaper than the official rate charged on the web site! By calling by phone, I not only got a room but also saved money besides.
The rooms are filling up fast, however. If you would like to stay at the Radisson Hotel Salt Lake City Downtown at 215 West South Temple, Salt Lake City, I'd suggest calling NOW. I also would call the hotel directly at (801) 531-7500 and ask for Reservations. I don't know if you can get the same price through Radisson's toll-free number or not.
The Salt Lake Plaza Hotel at Temple Square is a different hotel across the street from the convention center and it reportedly does have rooms available as well. You can try the web site at http://www.plaza-hotel.com/ or call (801) 521-0130.
There are many more hotels in the area so I doubt if you will get stranded. However, all the other hotels are a bit further away and I will remind you that the city blocks in Salt Lake City are big blocks. A description of "two blocks from the convention center" will be further away than you might imagine!
