The calendar uses wiki software. A wiki is a web site that allows visitors to make changes, contributions, or corrections. This means you and all the other readers of this newsletter can add information directly.
I invite everyone to add events to the calendar at http://www.eogn.com/calendar. It might be an event that your local society is sponsoring or simply an interesting event that you read about elsewhere. If you or someone you know is holding an online webinar, you might add that also.
Ward Cunningham, the developer of the first wiki software, WikiWikiWeb, originally described it as "the simplest online database that could possibly work". "Wiki" is a Hawaiian word meaning "fast" or "quick." Indeed, the Calendar of Genealogy Events will allow you to add events quickly and easily.
Adding information to the Calendar of Genealogy Events is simple. Go to http://www.eogn.com/calendar and click on the state or province where the event will be held. Please notice there is also an "Online Webinars" section. Once the page is displayed, you will see other events previously listed, if any. Look near the bottom of the page and click on "EditText of this page." This will display an edit window where you can add your event.
To see an example of a page that already has some listings, go to http://www.eogn.com/calendar and click on “Illinois.”
You will want to place your event in chronological order, so scroll down the edit window to begin entering your details in the desired spot. I would suggest you enter a brief description of your event—perhaps a paragraph or two with the date and location clearly given, along with the theme of the event, perhaps the names of the speakers, and anything else you think is appropriate. If there is a web page that provides more information, be sure to add its web address. By beginning the address with “http://” you will create a link which others can click on to go to that site for full details.
Fancy formatting is not required. However, if you would like to use bold, italics, or other text, go to http://eogn.com/calendar/index.php?HowToUseWiki. You can even add images if you wish. For one example of images, go to the Calendar of Genealogy Events at http://www.eogn.com/calendar and click on "Illinois."
Want to see the newly-added events? Go to the Calendar of Genealogy Events at http://www.eogn.com/calendar and click on "See RecentChanges for the latest additions and changes."
The Calendar of Genealogy Events was created within the past few days; so, obviously, it does not yet have many events listed. That's where you come in: I invite you to add your event(s) to the lists. If you and many others add lots of events, we all benefit.
If you find a listing for an event that has already occurred, please delete it. You can do so yourself within seconds. Look near the bottom of the page and click on "EditText of this page." Delete the obsolete information and then click on SAVE. That's it!
The Calendar of Genealogy Events is in beta. If sufficient interest is shown and many new entries are entered, this site will continue in operation. If not, I will delete it someday.
I invite you to try the Calendar of Genealogy Events at http://www.eogn.com/calendar.
A note to would-be spammers: You are wasting your time here. Experience has shown that such messages do not remain online very long and never result in any sales. Typically, the first person that sees your spam message will delete it and no one else will ever see it.
A note to everyone else: If you see spam, advertisements, pornography, or any other junk that is not related to genealogy events, please delete it yourself. It only takes a second or two. To delete anything that is inappropriate, click on "EditText of this page." Delete the obsolete information and then click on SAVE.
