For the past two weeks, I have experimented by sending two versions of the weekly Plus Edition newsletter by email:
The Long Version email message contains every word of every article for the past week. It is a very long email message and often gets blocked by receiving mail servers' spam filters.
The Short Version contains only the headlines of the new articles and then contains a link to http://www.eogn.com/wp/thisweek.htm. Plus Edition subscribers can click on that link, enter a user name and password, and then read the entire weekly newsletter in their web browser. Clicking on a link always works, regardless of what the receiving mail server does to your in-box. The Short Version seems to get past more spam filters simply because it is much, much shorter than the Long Version.
Most subscribers who have written to me reported they prefer the Long Version.
After reading the reports from Plus Edition subscribers for the past two weeks, I now believe about 98% of the subscribers received both versions. However, my inbox has perhaps two dozen messages or so from people who report they missed one version or the other. Some received only the short version, which I understand, others received only the long version, which I cannot explain.
Sadly, these reports are not unique to the EOGN newsletter. I have talked with a number of other people who are in the business of sending many email messages to thousands of recipients. All of them report somewhat similar stories.
I plan to continue sending duplicate copies to everyone until I find a better system. Please delete the version you do not want when (and if) it arrives in your in-box.
I cannot always explain why your email provider or a spam filter in your computer is blocking the newsletters. I do know that several email providers block ALL the eogn.com newsletters. I also know that AOL blocks them some of the time but not always, as do several other email services. Google's Gmail likes to place the newsletters in the Spam Folder sometimes but otherwise the newsletters always seem to arrive properly in the Gmail in-box. Luckily, it is easy to change Gmail's filters so that all EOGN newsletters are always placed into your in-box.
I also know that other email providers also block the EOGN newsletters frequently but I have never been able to create an accurate list of those that do versus those that do not. Things seem to change frequently.
Don't forget that you can ALWAYS read this week's Plus Edition newsletter at ANY TIME at http://www.eogn.com/wp/thisweek.htm, regardless of what your email provider does to your incoming email messages.
Last week's Plus Edition newsletter is always available online at http://www.eogn.com/wp/lastweek.htm.
The two-week-old Plus Edition newsletter is always available online at http://www.eogn.com/wp/twoweeks.htm.
A PDF version of this week's Plus Edition newsletter is always available at http://www.eogn.com/wp/thisweek.pdf.
If you ever find a way to guarantee delivery of email newsletters, please let me know! I'm willing to pay quite a bit of money to anyone who can provide a solution that will deliver 100% of the newsletters by email to 100% of the subscribers every week. So far, I have asked several experts who are in the business of sending bulk email messages and not one of them has been able to find a reliable solution. All of them tell me they have the same problem.
Actually, anyone who can find a solution that guarantees delivery of all wanted email messages will become a millionaire as soon as he or she publishes a book describing how to guarantee delivery. Thousands of Internet authors will buy that book! I'll be in the front of the line to purchase that book. So far, nobody has been able to write that book.
Do you have comments or suggestions? If so, please post your words at the end of this article in the Plus Edition subscribers' web site at http://eogn.com/wp/?p=26051.
