BitTorrent, Inc. has now announced a new version for the iOS operating system used on Apple's iPad, iPhone, and iPod devices. BitTorrent Sync has always been available for Windows, Macintosh, Linux, and Android devices. Today's announcement adds Apple iOS to the list of supported platforms. BitTorrent Sync remains free of charge, simple to use, and secure.
BitTorrent lets you sync an unlimited number of files and folders of any size across all of your trusted devices, even between two computers running different operating systems. I use BitTorrent Sync to copy files to and from my computer at home, another computer in a winter home, and to and from a server I own that is located in a data center in Atlanta. I know several people who use BitTorrent Sync to automatically copy files back and forth between a computer at home and one in the office. Others may use BitTorrent Sync to share videos and old family photographs and possibly other files with a distant relative. It is also an excellent method of backing up your genealogy database to another computer that is "off-site" for protection against disasters.
In short, BitTorrent Sync becomes my own "personal cloud," allowing me to store data off-site for safety. It also provides a convenient method of making sure I have the latest versions of important files in each computer I use.
What I like most about BitTorrent Sync is the security. All the traffic between devices is encrypted with AES cypher and a 256-bit key created on the base of the secret—a random string (20 bytes or more) that is unique for every folder. Nobody can intercept your private information while it is being transferred across the Internet. Unlike Dropbox and most other file replication services, your data is never stored on anyone else's servers. Your data is only stored on computers you own or control, never anyplace else. Assuming you also take steps to secure your own computers, your data remains secure and hidden from everyone else. Thanks to the encryption used, even NSA and other snoops will have a hard time seeing your files.
The price? Free of charge.
