The following is a Plus Edition article written by and copyright by Dick Eastman.
Anyone who has traveled overseas can tell you that placing phone calls back home can be very expensive when calling from a hotel room or from a cell phone used in a foreign country or with almost any other method. However, there are numerous low-cost or even free alternatives for anyone who carries a smartphone or a tablet computer or a laptop computer. A newsletter reader wrote today, asking, "Dick, is there a free iPhone/smartphone app I can use outside the U.S. to call back to the U.S. using VoIP at no cost?" I thought I would answer here in the newsletter where everyone else can benefit.
The short answer is, “Yes, you can call home—for little or no cost!” You can do this with most any computing device that has a speaker and a microphone; that includes smartphones, tablets, and laptop computers. While the question asked about calls to the U.S., most of this answer will also apply to calls made to and from other countries, and many of the products I mention are available on Apple iPhone and iPad mobile devices as well as on Android, Windows, and Macintosh operating systems.
