The following book review was written by Bobbi King:
Out-of-Style. A Modern Perspective of How, Why and When Vintage Fashions Evolved. By Betty Kreisel Shubert. Published by Flashback Publishing. 2013. 350 pages.
This is a colorful compendium of women’s, men’s, and children’s clothing and hair fashion styles through the 19th and 20th century eras. The smart sketches, all rendered by the author, give the book a stylish, quirky look that absorbs your attention and holds on to it to the very last page.
Betty Shubert calls this book her life’s work. It’s a grand resolution to a glamorous lifetime of costume study and design. At the age of 13 one of her dress designs sold to a manufacturer, and by age 19 she was acknowledged as Hollywood’s youngest show business designer. Over the course of her career she adorned vaudevillians, movie actors and actresses, cigarette girls working the nightclubs, Broadway stars, television personalities, and Las Vegas showgirls. She wrote and illustrated the column “Out of Style” for Ancestry Magazine.
She offers historical tidbits relevant today, such as:
“In the 1860s, fashion literature encouraged women to remodel…This led to outfits of separate skirts, blouses and jackets…Interesting belts were born to pull the look together; this was the origin of Separates and Sportswear as we know them today.”
Illustrative sets of drawings cycle through the eras of a particular style. Sections include:
Why Hoop Skirts Were Born;
The Nine Sequential Phases of the Rise and Fall…and Rise (Again!) of the
When Little Boys Wore Dresses and Little Girls Wore Pantaloons;
and the modernization of homes with the invention of sewing machines.
The format enhances the content. Drawings on the left page and descriptive text on the right add to the ease of understanding and interest.
This book takes us on an amusing, pleasant fashion journey back in time while providing us with potentially useful information important to our research.
I thoroughly enjoyed the trip, and I think you will too.
