Writing in the BoingBoing Blog, Cory Doctorow has written a rather inflammatory article listing records destroyed by Canadian Conservatives. The article obviously is a highly biased article full of political accusations, written by a supporter of the opposition. However, one item that caught my eye should be of concern to historians and many others: Doctorow claims an irreplaceable, 50-volume collection of logs from HMS Challenger's 19th century expedition went to the landfill, taking with them the crucial observations of marine life, fish stocks and fisheries of the age. The originals were tossed out although a copy of these logs survives overseas.
