University of Mississippi School of Dentistry was slated to become a parking garage, but the plans were shelved after 1,000 bodies were found in a graveyard. Officials believe there may be still more bodies.
The bodies found so far are believed to have been patients at the Mississippi State Lunatic Asylum a century ago. “None have names,” said Dr. James Keeton, dean of the medical school. Other bodies may lie beneath the earth: former slaves, tuberculosis victims and possibly even Civil War dead. (The cemetery is near the site of a Civil War battle during the 1863 siege of Jackson.)
