The following is an announcement from the Family History Information Standards Organisation:
Date: 8th May 2013
Eneclann (www.eneclann.ie) and Family History Information Standards Organisation, Inc. (FHISO) announced today that Eneclann has finalised its plans to become a founding member of the organisation. Brian Donovan, Eneclann’s CEO, said of the partnership “Digitising, indexing and publishing family history records online is fraught with problems. Genealogy needs FHISO to help navigate a collaborative solution to shared problems, and to set meaningful standards, and we in Eneclann are delighted to be partners in this”. The company will participate with other FHISO members from the global genealogical community in the development of standards for the digital representation and sharing of family history and genealogical information. As an organisation involved in the management, digitisation of, and research with archives, they bring a unique perspective on the work of FHISO. Fiona Fitzsimons, Research Director, commented ‘Digitisation of records has transformed the way we do genealogy, but we need standards so we can be sure of the quality of the electronic records we use. FHISO is a welcome development to achieve this goal.’
Mocavo solicited proposals in November from organizations that care for genealogical content, archives, or historical records that they wish to make freely available online. Details may be found at http://goo.gl/KJuF8. Now Mocavo has announced the winner of that grant:
In November of last year we announced the first ever Mocavo Community Digitization Grant. We committed to provide up to $25,000 in digitization services to preserve historical records and make them available for free access. Today we are delighted to announce the recipient of the Mocavo Community Digitization Grant is the Bethany Children’s Home.
Bethany Children’s home is a regional ministry serving over 300 youth and their families, every year, in Eastern Pennsylvania. The home began in 1862 as one man’s dream. On a trip home from Norfolk to Philadelphia, Rev. Emmanuel Boehringer passed through the aftermath of the Battle of Antietam, where 25,000 men lay scattered across the countryside dead or wounded. As he stopped to help bandage their wounds, many of the men asked: “What will become of my children?” And thus Rev. Boehringer’s dream for an orphans’ home was born.

GRIP’s week-long courses will be held from July 21 through July 26, 2013 at LaRoche College, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Last year students from 28 states enjoyed a small collegial atmosphere where they were able to know not only their classmates and instructors, but the other students in the intimate campus atmosphere. Dorm rooms, just steps from the classrooms and cafeteria, make off-hours fun and friendly.
DUBLIN, Ohio, January 31, 2013 — OCLC and FamilySearch International, the largest genealogy organization in the world, have signed an agreement that will enrich WorldCat and FamilySearch services with data from both organizations to provide users with more resources for improved genealogy research.
Under this new partnership, OCLC will incorporate data from FamilySearch’s catalog of genealogical materials into WorldCat, and FamilySearch will use OCLC cataloging services to continue to catalog its collections in WorldCat. FamilySearch will also use the WorldCat Search API to incorporate WorldCat results into search results returned by FamilySearch genealogy services.
The Emigrant Research Center in Växjö, Sweden, is closing forever. The information on the Center's web site simply states: "We are still receiving research assignments and answer general inquiries about emigration by e-mail or letter. Visitors to the archives and libraries (NB: No family history) are welcome by appointment."
The words "No family history" mean just that: no genealogy research will be conducted. Anyone contacting the Emigrant Research Center in Växjö is being referred to the Emigranternas Hus in Göteborg.
