The Guild of One-Name Studies has today opened its on-line store. The Guild bookstall sells a wide range of genealogical and one-name study books, genealogical software and various well illustrated books about places (typically UK towns) and their history. These items are currently only available to members of the Guild or can be purchased from the Guild’s bookstall.
However from today there is now an online facility for ordering vouchers www.one-name.org/cgi-bin/vouchers/sales.cgi via PayPal, credit card, or (by post) by cheque. Eventually the range of items available on-line will increase but at present only vouchers can be purchased on-line.

I am pleased to announce a new genealogy service on the World Wide Web. I have been building this service over the past few weeks and it has been in a limited beta test for a while with about 100 beta users. The beta testers helped point out needed improvements and most of those are now in place. Now I believe the new web site is ready for everyone.

The BBC recently published an article about the end of a five-year project to make 190,000 wills available online has been completed. The project is complete and the wills are available now. About 800,000 pages of documents have been placed on the National Library of Wales' website.
The National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth said the wills dated from the 14th Century until 1858, when civil probate was introduced, and 1,000 of them were written in Welsh.

Of course, other companies have already placed the census records online so what's the big deal? The Footnote.com version, for the first time, will allow you to correct, comment, or supplement the original records. You can even add pictures. You can also link people together as relatives, even if they live in different households. That's all new.
You will be able to search the records, find the person(s) you are interested in, and then view the original record in the enumerator's handwriting. (Other vendors offer that service also.) However, with Footnote.com, you can append notes or even pictures that will be visible to anyone who searches for the same record in the future. You can even link people together, including those who do not live in the same household. You can never DELETE anything from the original record but you can add such things as:

The University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth will hold a public dedication of the Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese-American Archives at the Clare T. Carney University Library, on Friday, September 18, 2009 at 4 p.m.
The Archives are named after Affonso Gil Mendes Ferreira, a founder of Portuguese-American radio back in 1933, whose daughter, Otilia Ferreira, made the lead gift to the Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese-American Archives Endowment.

The Martin F. Schmidt Research Library of the Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) recently became an affiliate library of the Family History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS).
Through an agreement with the Genealogical Society of Utah, FamilySearch, patrons of the KHS library have access to the LDS family-history collection of microfilm and microfiche, which is currently comprised of over 3.1 million microforms.
