Why I Use PayPal to Process Credit Card Payments

Regardless of which method of payment method you select, the funds will always be processed by PayPal, even if you do not have a PayPal account. When you receive a statement from your credit card company, the charge will show as PayPal*EOGN.

I love PayPal and have been a satisfied PayPal customer for more than thirteen years. When you pay with PayPal, the merchant (that’s me) never sees your credit card or its number. Without that number, a merchant cannot “rip off” your card. Some other payment processors will even send your credit card number to the merchant and who knows how well the merchant protects that information from hackers or even from the merchant’s own emloyees? Not PayPal, however. PayPal has much higher security and never gives your credit card number to anyone else. Best of all, you don’t even need a PayPal account to use the company’s services.

I used to work in the Customer Service Department of a company that provided credit card online processing. (Our biggest competitor was PayPal.) All of our customers were merchants who sold products online and we processed the credit card transactions for the merchants. In my job, I investigated credit card fraud daily. I also educated our merchant/customers on how to minimize credit card fraud risks. I am intimately familiar with credit card fraud, its causes and its solutions. Based on my experience, I prefer PayPal and I use it whenever possible for my own online purchases. I use PayPal for processing credit cards because the service is popular, very secure, and because PayPal never loses a transaction. I have been a PayPal customer for more than thirteen years now, as a buyer, and love the fact that PayPal is so reliable. I have made many payments via PayPal over the years and have never had a problem with the company’s services. In the time I have accepted PayPal payments for newsletter subscriptions, that reliability has continued. I have never contacted PayPal for assistance simply because I have never needed assistance! Everything just works.

Since I started producing a Plus Edition genealogy newsletter several years ago, I have used three different payment processors to handle the credit card payments. PayPal has proven to be the most reliable of the three.

The first payment processor I used appeared to work well most of the time but occasionally lost payments and then would not notify me of a new subscription. I could find all the subscriptions if I went in and searched for each one manually, one at a time, but the automated process only worked about 99% of the time. I hate it when I get new subscribers and nobody tells me!

The second payment processor I used appeared to be very reliable but charged several “extra fees” that had not been prominently mentioned in their advertising. (Those fees were mentioned in the small print on the company’s very long customer agreement form.) The company’s per-transaction fees (that I pay, the subscriber never sees those fees) were about 35% higher than PayPal’s fees. That payment service then added an extra monthly “gateway fee” and a bank deposit fee on top of that. Using that service cost me several hundred dollars extra per year in fees.

I have used PayPal for years for purchases I have made. I have always been pleased with PayPal and love the company’s security. Every online transaction is guaranteed (both for me and for the subscriber) against fraud by PayPal PLUS every online transaction is also guaranteed against fraud by the credit card company (VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover Card). I like the assurance of double guarantees. I also like the reasonable fees charged to me for accepting credit card payments by PayPal.

NOTE #1: I will also accept checks sent in the mail. However, please be aware that sending a check in the mail is much more risky than using a credit card online. Online credit card theft is rare and, when it does occur, your credit card is insured. You might suffer some inconvenience but you will never lose any money in any online credit card transaction if you report the fraud promptly. (Don’t wait six months to report it!) In contrast, thousands of checks are stolen from the postal system every day. Also, unlike credit cards, most checks are not guaranteed against fraud. (Check with your bank to see if your checking account is one of the few exceptions. Free checking accounts are almost never guaranteed against fraud.) If someone steals your check from the mail and cashes it, you probably will lose the money.

NOTE #2: You do not need a PayPal account to make a payment. All you need is a credit card or a checking account. However, more than 100 million people have created PayPal accounts, according to PayPal, to simplify the transactions even more. If you have a PayPal account, you don’t have to enter your credit card information and mailing address every time. However, creating a PayPal account is optional, you are always in control of your own credit card(s). Nothing ever gets charged to your credit card without your permission.

NOTE #3: PayPal is a wholly-owned subsidiary of eBay, the online auction giant. eBay stands behind every transaction made with PayPal. In the unlikely event that someone does steal your credit card information, eBay/PayPal will reimburse you for every fraudulent transaction made.

NOTE #4: PayPal keeps your credit card secret! In fact, PayPal won’t even tell me the credit card number or even what kind of card you use! Your credit card information is not stored on various web servers around the world, your private information is kept safe and secure. PayPal only tells me that there is a new transaction, the start date of the subscription, and the amount paid. PayPal also tells me your name and email address. However, I never see your physical address, your telephone number, your credit card number, or any other sensitive information. I like the fact that I don’t have to protect information that I do not have! Don’t you wish all web sites were as security conscious?

NOTE #5: When entering your credit card information and your address, you will note that PayPal uses a high-security, encrypted SSL connection. You will notice that the “padlock” in your web browser is locked. Your information cannot be intercepted and read by anyone other than PayPal. Even I cannot see the information.  All credit card payments should be made with high-security SSL connections!

How safe is your personal information?

Extremely safe.

First, I don’t save much information. I keep your name, your email address, the date your subscription began, and the date it ends. That’s it.

When you do subscribe, you do have to enter your credit card information on PayPal’s safe and secure web pages. The information is kept by PayPal; I never see your credit card information.You do not need a PayPal account.

PayPal is fully bonded and insured so there is no risk. If your card is ever used fraudulently (which is doubtful), you will receive a prompt and full refund. In addition, VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover card also all insure all of your online transactions. You have double insurance!

The information is sent to the bank that issued your credit card by a high-security connection and then the web server waits up to ten seconds for a reply. The reply might be “approved” or it might be “declined.” A third possibility is no reply at all, perhaps because the bank’s computer is down or because of a network problem. A non-response is treated as a “decline.”

The appropriate response is immediately displayed to you on your screen and then your credit card information, your billing address and your telephone number is erased. I don’t want to store that information. The best security of all is when the information doesn’t exist!

Next year, when you renew, you will have to enter that information once again. I don’t renew your subscription automatically or store your credit card information. Although I probably would make more money if I did, I don’t like companies that do this to me so I won’t do it to you.

Renewal Policy: I do not automatically renew your subscription when it expires. Auto-renewals are a shoddy business practice and I refuse to use that technique. In fact, I never see your credit card number! I have decided that I do not wish to save that number and then charge you later for something else, not even for a renewal. Shortly before your subscription expires, you will receive a renewal notice via e-mail. If you wish to renew, you will need to take action at that time. If you do nothing, the subscription expires without renewal. Don’t you wish that all companies did the same?

Privacy Policy: I hate spam as much as you do. I recognize the importance of subscribers’ privacy and will never – under any circumstance – rent, sell, exchange or in any way make your information available to third parties. I also will not flood your in-box with messages. You will receive a mailing once a week, containing the latest edition of the newsletter. Two weeks before your subscription expires, you will receive a renewal notice.

  1. If you cancel your subscription in the first 30 days, you will receive a 100% refund of the subscription price. No questions asked. All you need to do is send a note requesting the cancellation.
  2. If you cancel your subscription after 30 days, you will receive a pro-rated refund of the remaining subscription time. For instance, if you cancel a 12-month subscription after five months (which means there is seven months remaining on the paid subscription), you will receive a refund of seven-twelfths (7/12) of the subscription price. Again, no questions asked. All you need to do is send a note requesting the cancellation.
