Legacy Family Tree offer – upgrade from Family Tree Maker for $10 off through 12/31/15

Ancestry.com announced last week that they will discontinue their Family Tree Maker software effective December 31, 2015. However, alternatives are available. In fact, Legacy Family Tree is one such alternative and is considered by many to be a better genealogy program than Family Tree Maker ever was. In fact, it is easy to export to export a Family Tree Maker database in GEDCOM format and then import it into Legacy Family Tree. The following is an extract from an article by Geoff Rasmussen in the Legacy Family Tree Blog:

We know this change is difficult (my very first genealogy software purchase was FTM…), yet know that you will enjoy Legacy Family Tree. Millions have already downloaded it.

Why FTM users love Legacy

So many former FTM users have turned to Legacy, and we asked them why. Here were their top reasons:

  • Company-user relationship, support
  • Reasonable pricing and free updates
  • Navigation and data entry
  • Sourcing capabilities
  • User-friendly
  • Reports
  • Name list
  • View multiple databases side-by-side / drag-drop
  • Web pages

Here’s the complete list with the users’ comments.

How many names can I inter in your family tree site??? I currently have 102,000+ names, 5 other trees and around 2000 photos which I need to import with my tree. I need info on this subject.

The Legacy video makes it sound so easy to import FTM data into their product. BUT they make no mention of the transfer of media content. GEDCOM files will not capture all information. There is a great deal more work involved than is mentioned on their video.

I purchased this program and have just now tranfered my FTM files by GEDCOM. I wa surprised by the easy change over! I’ve heard that there may be some infoo that does’nt transfer but I can compare files easily. So far I am very iimpreessed with Legacy.

It seems to me that a better answer to the problems that Family Tree Maker’s demise would be for Ancestry or some other entity to step up to the plate and update gencom to that it will truly work with all files, media and programs, thereby protecting the folks that have made genealogy such a great thing. That way any corporation could come and go at their whim without killing the pleasure and passion we all have.

A woman who is a rep for Legacy was the speaker and member at a genealogy later posted a message on the club site about the closing of FTM and laughed about it. There is no way I would get Legacy after her message. If that is how Legacy feeds about those who have lost years of work then they do not need my business. Family Historian was very helpful in getting me setup with both my GEDCOM file and media file. I do not need to re-enter any data where I would with Legacy.

Some many different opinions on what to do about FTM. I have used them for almost 20 years and always frustrated with the media issues. IF I downloaded onto Legacy would my media pictures transfer and if not how do you suggest we transfer all pictures?

Dick, you seem to mention the offers made by every software company other than RootsMagic. They have an excellent offer for FTM users and the best tech support in the business to help FTM people with the switch. I am a long term and extremely happy RootsMagic user. You are short changing your readers by not mentioning RootsMagic.

Oh, I think there are more missing ones than that. Reunion, for instance. However, all of those announcements were sent to me by the vendors. You will notice that the announcements all start off with the words, “The following announcement was written by …”

If a company doesn’t send an announcement, there’s nothing for me to publish.
