A Humorous Tombstone

Tombstone of B.P. “Pearl” Roberts, Key West, Florida

I’m stunned by this because I was always thought that Spike Milligan’s gravestone epitaph (“I told you I was ill” – voted in 2012 the UK’s favourite epitaph) was an original. Clearly this lady got in before him unless the stone isn’t contemporaneous with her date of death.

This is also well known in the UK as a tombstone inscription of Spike Milligan, famous comedian, comic actor, poet and artist, who co-created the Goon Show in the 1950s. Spike died in 2002 and is buried in a churchyard in East Sussex. He had long wanted “ I told you I was ill!” as an inscription but this was reported as not acceptable to the church authorities. It does still appear on his tombstone but in Gaelic! Spike had become an Irish citizen in 1962.
A Google search will bring up photos of this headstone.

My favorite from my local cemetery is “I’d rather be reading this.”
